A pilot light that won’t stay lit is one of the most common gas fireplace problems. The good news is that the cause is usually a small part that can be cleaned or replaced. Here are the most likely reasons.
1. A dirty or weak thermocouple or thermopile
These small sensors sit in the pilot flame and tell the gas valve it is safe to stay open. When they are dirty, worn or not fully in the flame, the valve shuts off the gas and the pilot goes out. This is the number one cause of pilot problems.
2. A dirty pilot assembly
Dust, lint and spider webs can partially block the small pilot orifice, creating a weak flame that doesn’t heat the sensor properly.
3. Drafts or venting issues
Strong wind or a venting problem can disturb the pilot flame. If the pilot goes out mostly on windy days, the venting should be checked.
4. Gas supply or pressure problems
Low gas pressure, a partly closed valve or a problem with the gas valve itself can all prevent the pilot from staying lit.
5. Faulty gas valve or control module
On newer fireplaces with electronic ignition, a failing control module or valve can cause intermittent lighting and shut-offs.
What you can safely check
- Make sure the gas shut-off valve to the fireplace is fully open.
- Follow the lighting instructions on the label inside your fireplace exactly.
- Replace the batteries in the remote and receiver.
Anything beyond that — cleaning the pilot assembly, testing the thermocouple, or checking gas pressure — should be done by a licensed gas technician.
